why become a member?

Membership in the local Union gives you a voice. Many people complain about legitimate problems we face as local freelancers. Membership gives you the chance to do something about it. We encourage all freelancers to let your voice be heard by becoming a member of Local 745.

Only members can participate in contract negotiations, vote on Collectively Bargained Agreements, elect the local Union leadership, and serve as a Union steward or a Union officer. There are also several programs sponsored by the IATSE International that only members have access to.

We maintain a Referral List of qualified freelance technicians, regularly updated, as our contracted employers have agreed to give preference in hiring to those referred to them by IATSE Local 745. Having your name placed on our list does not guarantee you any work.

Any individual, not currently on the list, who wants to be included in the Minnesota IATSE Local 745 Referral List MUST be either crewed by an employer OR be requested by an employer to be added to the list.

For Full Membership, the initial cost is $361. This includes the International ($100) and Local ($200) initiation fees as well as your first quarter of dues (2019: $61/quarter) in IATSE Local 745. You can request an application through our Contact Form. Upon completion, please send the completed forms and appropriate payment to:

IATSE LOCAL 745

P.O. BOX 3278

Minneapolis, MN 55403

Once we receive your application, we will review it and then forward it to the IATSE International offices. They will again review and either accept or deny your membership. Either way, you will be notified of the status of your application. If accepted, you will receive a Union card and quarterly stamp.

Once your membership is approved, your ongoing financial obligations to the IATSE will be (as of 2019 - $61) per quarter. You are still required to pay the 1% Referral List fee on all gross earnings done under a Collective Bargaining Agreement. You will be issued a new IATSE stamp for each quarter which you are current. Quarterly due dates are January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1.

It is important to note that you do have to be a Union member to work under the contract but you will be limited as to how and when you can work. All persons receive equal benefits under the contract, regardless of their membership status with IATSE Local 745.
